Is there a clear chemical that can be applied that when water is poured it sucks in the water?

I am designing a new magic trick and the idea is that i would have a person think of something then ask them to write it down, then i would take a water bottle and pour some water on the ground and magcially the water would spread through the ground and start to take form as it revealed what they thought of. Theres a cash prize to whom ever contributes to the creation of this effect.

The powder is called sodium polyacrylate, and is available from many sources, including diapers.

It takes the form of a white powder when dry. When water is applied, it nearly instantly sucks it up and swells up to produce a clear gel many times the volume of the original powder.

Plaster of paris and anhydrous cupric sulfate absorb water as well, but will not swell up and also absorb much less water than these polymers do.
